NOBEL PRIZE

Hi readers!

In this article I am going to write about the Nobel Prize winners in Physiology or Medicine in 2015. The Nobel Prize is a set of annual international awards bestowed on several categories by Swedish and Norwegian institutions in recognition of academic, cultural or scientific advances.

After reading this article you will know about the winners and why did they win the price.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 was divided in two: one half jointly to William C. Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura and the other half to Youyou Tu.

Satoshi Ōmura

I have decided to write about Youyou Tu and what was the reason for giving her the half price.

Youyou Tu

Youyou Tu
was born on 30 December 1930. She lives in Beijing and she is a Chinese pharmaceutical chemist and educator. Youyou Tu had won many awards: Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award (2011), Warren Alpert Foundation Prize (2015), Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2015) and State Preeminent Science and Technology Award, P. R. China (2016).

The jury gave Youyou Tu the half prize for her discoveries concerning a novel therapy against Malaria. Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease affecting humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans belonging to the Plasmodium type. Malaria causes symptoms like fever, tiredness, vomiting and headaches. In severe cases it can cause yellow skin, seizures, coma or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten. If it isn't properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance will disappear over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria.

The Malaria had caused 730,500 deaths in 2015. Because of that, Youyou Tu discovered a novel therapy against the illness to try to reduce this number.

From my point of view, the exploration of this Chinese pharmaceutical is very interesting, because we can reduce a lot the mortality rate with this medical advancement. Nowadays, if this medicine doesn’t exist a lot of people will die due to the Malaria.

Today, research helps develop more effective treatments for different illnesses. It also helps us understand how to prevent them, as well as diagnose them earlier.

In my opinion, the Government should spend more money on medical investigations. When the Government invests in science, it helps to support the training of the scientists and doctors. The Government’s investment in research is also important so that we can provide the latest treatments to patients faster.

I have chosen to write about this because I think medical discovery is very important to the evolution of the human health. Protecting science and scientific discoveries is necessary, and it’s something that affects all medical research.

Here you have a video where you can see how they gave the nobel prize to the winners in Physiology or Medicine in 2015:
